Roblox, once known as a hub for younger players immersed in role-playing games, has evolved into a versatile platform hosting events from virtual concerts to political demonstrations. Now, it might also become the place where you meet your soulmate.
Recently, Roblox CEO David Baszucki shared his vision for the platform’s future, focusing on romance. In a podcast interview, he mentioned, “I think a lot of people who are too afraid to go on a real-life date might find it easier to have a virtual date to start, and then if they connect, move to the physical world.”
This concept of immersive dating was initially introduced at the 2023 Roblox Developers Conference. The idea is for users to engage in virtual dates with others they meet in the metaverse, potentially leading to “real-life relationships.” David highlighted the “loneliness epidemic” as a driving force, noting that 73% of Gen Z reportedly struggles with loneliness, making efforts to foster real-world connections increasingly important.
However, this feature isn’t available yet. Currently, Roblox Community Standards prohibit romantic relationships among players, mainly because a significant portion (39%) of users are under 13. The proposed dating service would be exclusive to ID-verified users aged 21 and over.
Initially, the idea of addressing loneliness through a digital platform where people date while physically apart seemed counterintuitive. Virtual reality dating appears to be a response to the fatigue of traditional dating apps. Yet, after considering it further, the prospect of virtual dates on Roblox seems appealing. As David pointed out, virtual dating can ease the anxiety of first dates, which is particularly relevant given the current reluctance to initiate in-person interactions. A study indicates that nearly half of young men aged 18-25 have never asked someone out in person, suggesting that the metaverse could facilitate connections that might not occur otherwise.
Virtual dates also require less preparation. Why bother with grooming when you can let your avatar shine? With physical pressures removed, users might focus more on meaningful conversations. This period of metaverse dating can be likened to the pod-dating episodes on “Love Is Blind,” offering a chance for genuine discussions without real-world distractions. For these reasons, I’m open to the idea of Roblox dating, approaching it with the same sincerity as meeting a match from a dating app.
